April 26 marked the 24th World Intellectual Property (IP) Day. On this day, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) held its 19th consecutive Open Day event. Shen Changyu, Commissioner of the CNIPA, attended the event and delivered a speech, while Deputy Commissioner Hu Wenhui chaired the event.
In his speech, Shen provided an overview of CNIPA's operations. He highlighted that 2023 was an extraordinary year for IP undertaking. The second plenary session of the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee conducted a new round of IP institutional reforms, adjusting the CNIPA into an institution directly under the State Council. The CPC Central Committee and the State Council approved the establishment of an inter-departmental joint meeting mechanism for building an IP powerhouse, deliberated and adopted several important IP-related documents, and implemented a comprehensive IP strategy. Two flagship events commemorating the 50th anniversary of cooperation between China and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) were successfully held, significantly strengthening the collaboration. In the meantime, the quality and efficiency of IP examination continued to improve, IP protection was strengthened, the commercialization and utilization of IP were accelerated, and international cooperation was deepened, with significant progress in all areas. Shen expressed hope that all sectors of society would actively participate and support the development of IP undertaking, contributing more IP strength to the rapid construction of an IP powerhouse and Chinese modernization.
During the event, CNIPA relevant departments released typical cases of IP administrative protection, the top 10 cases of patent re-examination and typical cases of trademark opposition in 2023. Fourteen national sub-venues were connected via video link to showcase their activities. Wu Peixin, Party Secretary of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, spoke as a guest representative.
Officials responsible for CNIPA's Patent Office and relevant departments attended the event, with more than 100 representatives from the General Office of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, innovation entities, IP agencies, and the media invited. During the event, representatives also visited the exhibition of new progress and achievements of IP undertaking, IP culture exhibition hall, IP reception hall, administrative adjudication court and examination departments, and interacted with the staff.
